What is Accessibility Services?

The Accessibility Services program is designed to provide academic support services for qualified students with disabilities. We assist the University in complying with the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973

- What do these Services include?
- These services can include scanning books to provide reader compatible files, proctoring exams by providing reading and/or writing assistance, notetaking services, sign language interpreters, tutoring, and extended time on exams. These are some examples of services which can be provided to qualified students.
- How do I find out if I qualify for services?
- The best thing to do is to come in and make an appointment do discuss your qualification for services
- How do I apply for services?
- The fist step is to stop by with your documentationand setup and appointment.
- Will my disability be confidential?
- Accessibility Services follows all FERPA confidentiality guidelines. All students and medical documentation are confidential. Documentation is only reviewed by the appropriate staff members.
- Who informs my instructors that I am a client of Accessibility Services?
- The staff at Accessibility Services will notify your instructors where and when appropriate (such as test scheduling).
- If I was considered learning disabled in high school do I still qualify for services?
- If a student has previous documentation of a learning disability, the student needs to make an appointment to see the LD Specialist or appropriate staff member. The student can do this by calling 277-3506 or coming by the office to make an appointment.
- If I am a freshman or a transfer student, do I need new documentation?
- If a student has previous documentation of a disability, the student needs to make an appointment to see an appropriate staff member. The student can do this by calling 277-3506 or coming by the office to make the appointment.
- It is suggested that the student bring the documentation report with him/her to the scheduled appointment. Student is responsible for obtaining his/her own diagnostic report.
- When the documentation is received by our staff it is reviewed for completeness. Then the student’s documentation is taken to a case-by-case meeting. Here, Accessibility Services Staff review the documentation and requested accommodations of student.
- I think I many have test anxiety, how do I get tested?
- The staff at Accessibility Services can recommend the appropriate venue for testing, to qualify for services.
- It takes me longer to read than others, does this mean I have a learning disorder?
- Some common characteristics of learning disabilities among college students:
- Reading Skills: Slow reading rate and/or difficulty in modifying reading rate accordance with material complexity, poor comprehension and retention, and difficulty identifying important points and themes.
- Written Language Skills: Frequent spelling errors (e.g., omissions, substitutions, and transpositions), especially in specialized and foreign vocabulary.
- Oral Language Skills: Inability to concentrate on and comprehend language, difficulty in orally expressing ideas that he/she seems to understand, and written expression is better than oral expression.
- Mathematical Skills: Reversed numbers (e.g., 123 to 321 or 231), confuses operational symbols, especially + and x, difficulty recalling the sequence of operational processes, and, difficulty comprehending word problems.
- Organizational and Study Skills: Time management difficulties, slow to start and complete tasks; repeated inability, on a day-to-day basis, to recall what has been taught; and difficulty following oral and written directions.Although Accessibility Services does not conduct tests for qualifying for services we can recommend certified diagnosticians.
- My mind wanders during lectures and tests, do I have a learning disorder?

- How do I sign up for classroom exams to be taken at accessibility services
- Contact Accessibity Services and we will work out the details
- How many days before exam day do I have to sign up for the exam?
- An exam must be scheduled at least 3 business days prior to the date you are scheduling for the exam.
- Can I get tutoring through this department if I qualify?
- Yes, Accessibility Services on a case by case basis can help provide tutoring assistance.
